Part One: How Community Met Rafael in His Hardest Season
Some stories begin with a calling.
Rafael’s began with heartbreak. In April 2025, his wife asked for a separation. For the first time in a long time, Rafael found himself facing a problem he couldn’t solve.
“My name is Rafael, I’m a husband, father, and IT professional in Toronto, and I’ve been attending The Peoples Church for about a year and a half.”
Looking back, he can see that carrying things alone had become almost second nature. Not because he wanted to. Because that’s what he thought strength looked like.
“I think many men believe they have to solve every problem on their own because asking for help can feel like admitting weakness, and I struggled with that too.”
If you’ve ever watched someone carry something that’s clearly too heavy but refuse to set it down, you know the feeling.
Many men know it too.
We convince ourselves that asking for help means we’ve somehow failed.
So we keep carrying it.
Quietly.
That’s where Rafael found himself. Then someone invited him into a Life Group with other men. He wasn’t looking for a programme. He wasn’t looking for answers.
He simply needed somewhere to begin.
“After my wife, asked for separation in April 2025, I came to The Peoples Church and joined the Life Group for men, where God used those relationships to transform my heart and, a year later, my wife saw that change and we began rebuilding our marriage.”
It wasn’t dramatic. No single conversation changed everything. No one tried to fix his life in one evening. Instead, something quieter happened.
Week after week, the same men kept showing up.
They listened.
They prayed.
They opened God’s Word together.
They reminded Rafael that God hadn’t abandoned him, even when life felt uncertain.
“Being surrounded by godly men who prayed with me, challenged me with Scripture, and encouraged me to be honest helped me trust God more and grow into a stronger follower of Jesus.”
Slowly, God began doing something deeper than Rafael expected. Before anything around him changed, God was changing him. The fear that had once convinced him to hide slowly gave way to honesty. The burden that had felt impossible to carry became lighter because it was no longer carried alone. Then something remarkable happened.
His wife began to notice.
A year after their separation, Rafael and his wife started rebuilding their marriage. That restoration didn’t begin when circumstances changed. It began when God started transforming Rafael’s heart through His Word and through people who faithfully walked beside him.
Today, when Rafael looks back on that season, he doesn’t just remember what he received.
He remembers who God used.
“When I looked back and saw how God had used other men to carry me through my hardest season, I knew I wanted to do the same for someone else.”
That’s how discipleship often works. Someone walks with us. Then, one day, we realize God is inviting us to walk with someone else. For Rafael, that’s become one of the greatest joys of this season.
“It excites me to walk alongside other men because I’ve experienced firsthand how one faithful community can completely change the direction of a person’s life.”
There are probably people sitting in church every Sunday carrying burdens no one else knows about.
Some are navigating broken relationships.
Some are asking questions they’ve never said out loud.
Others simply wonder where they belong.
Rafael understands that feeling. He also knows what happened when he stopped trying to carry everything alone.
“Because God never intended us to fight our battles alone, we grow stronger when we encourage, challenge, and pray for one another.”
If someone told Rafael a few years ago that one conversation could eventually lead to renewed hope in his marriage, he probably wouldn’t have believed them.
But that’s rarely how God works. More often, He works through ordinary people who faithfully keep showing up.
Around a table.
Around Scripture.
Around prayer.
When asked what he would say to another man who thinks he doesn’t need community, Rafael doesn’t offer advice. He simply tells his own story.
“I would tell him I thought the same until I discovered that real strength comes from allowing God to work through other men in your life.”
Growing as a disciple doesn’t happen all at once.
Sometimes it begins with one small decision.
Showing up.
Being honest.
Allowing yourself to be known.
For Rafael, that first step became part of the way God met him in his hardest season—and continued shaping him into the man He was calling him to become.
When asked to finish the sentence, “Growing as a disciple of Jesus with other men has…”
Rafael answered:
“Transformed my faith, restored hope in my marriage, and made me passionate about helping other men experience the same grace.”
Sometimes, community begins with one small decision.
A conversation.
A seat in a room.
A willingness to let someone else in.
For Rafael, that step became part of the way God met him in his hardest season—and began leading him toward restoration.
